Excerpt
The book of Esther is an anonymous work, the events of which take place over a ten-year period of King Xerxes I’s reign, from 483-473BC, and written to explain the feast of Purim, still celebrated by Jews today. At this point in history, the people of Israel and Judah were dispersed throughout the Persian empire. Some had returned to Jerusalem, but many remained a minority group in exile, viewed by the people around them with suspicion. While God is not mentioned by name in the pages of Esther, the story of His people’s survival through this book provides us with an important link between Abraham and Christ, and ultimately the Church of today. Without the providence of God working through the courageous acts of His people, the Jews would surely have been destroyed under Haman.
But our God is strong and mighty to save. He always keeps His promises and even when He seems silent, He is working things out for good. What He planned to accomplish through Jesus would succeed, even against the seemingly insurmountable odds of Israel’s enemies. We learn from the story of Esther that evil will never, ever win….

Monologue Excerpt
(ESTHER talks to the audience as if she is retelling her story to a younger generation. Throughout the monologue, ESTHER defines herself through various statements highlighted in bold.)
I was a nobody. The orphaned child of my cousin Mordecai and a stranger in the land of my birth. Unremarkable. Invisible. Until the challenge of Queen Vashti shook the very foundations of the empire. No woman in Persia would be allowed to disobey the head of her household. Even the Queen. She was removed from her position and an edict issued from the palace that ripped many young and beautiful girls from homes, and promises, and futures, to be tossed into the harem of a greedy and foolish King.
I was one of those girls. I can remember seeing the majesty of the palace through streams of silent tears, resigning myself to the fate of every other beautiful woman whose life had been stolen. I was going to be a concubine of King Xerxes…whether I wanted to or not. Lifting my head in quiet defiance, I left all that grieved me at the palace gates, knowing that if I must walk into a story of someone else’s choosing, I would do so with the strength and dignity of my heritage. All that was left, all that was mine to hold sacred, was my identity as a Jew…something Mordecai instructed me to protect at all costs.
Upon entering the palace, I was put in the charge of Hegai, the King’s eunuch, and began twelve months of grueling beauty treatments. I had no expectations, no aspirations of becoming queen and I wrestled through my questions to the noise of incessant chatter and vain women….
