Monologue Backstory & Action Summary
LILY is a single, unattached, successful young woman. Her job has caused her to create a life away from her first family. Her life has taken a different path than that of her older brother who is married with two little girls. She is cautious about coming home for Christmas because she doesn’t know where she fits in the new stage of life her first family has moved into.
While LILY is traveling home for Christmas, a Midwestern winter storm blows in forcing her and everyone else on the road to stop and seek shelter. The rest stop is full to overflowing and LILY finds herself at a small church/parsonage. The delay in travel makes space for LILY to consider her life, her choices and the meaning of Christmas. After considering the events and the reflection afforded her during the delay of travel, LILY realizes that the missing piece in her life is the Christ-Child of Christmas.
Production Notes
LILY comes from OUTSIDE, where the storm and her stranded car are, from STAGE RIGHT. Throughout the monologues she makes use of an actual NATIVITY, props, etc. set up CENTER STAGE. She will reference OUTSIDE by way of an imaginary window/door. Her monologues are reflective, and introspective using the audience as her primary interaction. Monologues run parallel to the videos until they intersect through the song “Everything Changed”.
The entire presentation will begin and end with a common NARRATOR.
Props & Costuming
LILY is dressed in winter attire including heavy coat, boots, hat, scarf, & gloves. She carries an oversize/overnight bag and a cross-body purse. She is trendy but not recognizably affluent.
Other props include: Coffee mug, sandwich, Bible, cell phone
