(Mis)Adventures in Potty Training: New Training Tools
I wish it were because I had so many deeply moving and inspirational blog posts to write that I had no time to update you on our adventure in potty training. The truth is that we have not only come to a screeching halt, we have gone completely in reverse.
Prior to Noah’s arrival, Elijah had next to zero accidents (with the exception of number two – we were still working on that one). He held his own for a couple weeks after Noah came to live with us, and then decided he no longer was interested in using the potty.
Elijah has not been defiant in any way – it’s not that he refuses to use the toilet or throws some kind of monstrous fit. If we put him on the toilet he will usually go. I think he’s just decided that it has become way too inconvenient to stop what he’s doing and get to the bathroom before he messes himself. He almost always tells me when he goes pee or poop. He just tells me while he’s doing it, or immediately thereafter.
A better mom would have worked very hard to regain lost ground. I on the other hand have found I have very little time after pumping and feeding and cleaning and medicating rashes around the clock to continue to make sure Elijah goes pee in the potty. I also have come to the conclusion that getting out of the house every day is a positive force at keeping my sanity. As a matter of principle, I decided we would not go back to diapers, but that I was tired of cleaning pee off the floor and hyper-color poop from Buzz Lightyear underwear.
So for the past four months we have been living in the in-between world of Pull-ups (which although do not work as well as diapers at preventing leaks, make my life a whole . . . lot . . . easier). Besides like Gordon says on Elmo’s Potty Time DVD (which by the way is a fantastic teaching tool – I love Sesame Street!) . . . everyone will go in their own time. It’s not like Elijah will be wearing Pull-Ups to pre-school. We will revisit potty training – when Momma’s ready this time :).
