The American flag has long stood as one of the most recognizable symbols of our freedom.  Where it waves we can expect the liberties that it represents to be respected, enforced, and lived with confidence.  It also stands as a reminder that our freedoms are not to be taken lightly.  It is a gift that we are to honor and treasure.

Our first President George Washington understood this.  In his Inaugural Address he is quoted as saying,

“No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the invisible hand which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States.  Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency.”

Our freedom does not stand on the shoulders of the Pilgrims, or the Patriots, the Founding Fathers, or our governing leaders alone.  We are Americans and we are free because God allowed us that freedom. It is with this in mind that we pledge our allegiance.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
