Narration 2
NARRATOR C
Reading from Matthew 1:18-22, 24
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.
NARRATOR D
Reading from Luke 2:1, 3-7
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
NARRATOR C
“O Little Town of Bethlehem” was written by Philip Brooks in 1868 three years after he returned from a trip to the Holy Land. When the Children’s choir needed a Christmas song for their Sunday School Christmas program he quickly wrote the lyrics inspired by his visit to Bethlehem and gave them to his organist. The day before the Christmas program, the song was completed.
NARRATOR D
Not only does the song come form a personal experience in Bethlehem, it also tells much of the Christmas story outlined in Matthew and Luke.

Carol 2
O Little Town of Bethlehem, Philip Brooks
Verse 1
O Little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by;
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting light;
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight
Verse 2
For Christ is born of Mary;
And gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King,
And peace to men on earth.
Verse 3
How silently how silently
The wondrous Gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heaven
No ear my hear His coming;
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him still
The dear Christ enters in
Verse 4
O Holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin and enter in,
Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Emmanuel.
