NARRATOR B
Mary is an important character in the story of Christmas. She was chosen by God to do something no woman before or since has ever been called to do – bear and raise the only Son of God.
Read for the first time, this seems like an impossible feat. (Reading from Luke 1:30-35, 37-38) The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Nothing is impossible with God.”
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.”
Mary, much unlike how most of us would react, didn’t run away or try to hide what was going on. She didn’t fear. She accepted the challenge even in light of the possible consequences of her day . . . and rejoiced.
(Reading from Luke 1:46-49) Mary said, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me – Holy is His name.”
“Breath of Heaven” also known as “Mary’s Song” is not a traditional Christmas Carol. Written by Amy Grant, this song paints a picture of Mary in her part of the greatest story ever told.
